Two days before Easter, Gabriel and I strolled to my friend Catherine's house, where she not only gave us the idea for Easter lanterns but gifted us the candles and wire.
Cultures all over the world welcome the anniversary of Christ's resurrection with candlelight vigils; hanging lanterns felt perfect for the occasion.
With jelly jars, macaroni, wire, votives and ribbons, lanterns are the perfect simple activity-- my big kids enjoyed creating them just as much as Catherine's tiny ones.

so did Mary.
As the sun began to set, we hung the lanterns from Ben's tree (because we miss him and the whole lantern thing seems kind of Italian) (and yes, we have a tree for each child because we are sentimental that way--five bloom white, one pink).
each candle seemed to burn brighter as darkness filled the yard.
We didn't sit for long, but it was just enough-- a pause, a stillness to celebrate the Light of the world.
