I won't lie-- it took half the day: shopping for ingredients, mixing the dough, sketching designs... about halfway through only Xander was still with me.
Mary had switched her focus to hair salon; you can see Hans on the computer in the background.
No worries, Xander likes working without interference. I'm pretty sure James Bond looks like this when he rolls out cookies too.
Since the smell of gingerbread you're not allowed to eat is almost torturous, we make Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies to sate the masses. If you like chocolate and gingerbread you NEED to make these.
Once the pieces are baked we begin construction. It doesn't matter where I place the castle or move the barstools, Xander insists on sitting on the counter. We use a stiff butter frosting; not that yucky royal icing.

But once the decorating begins everyone is interested again (I don't care if you've been lifting weights Stefan, zip up your sweatshirt).
Xander, of course, remains on the counter.

Super fun! I love the idea of the cooperative castle, we've do six little houses (one for each child) with assistance from mom and dad. We make ours with the royal icing. I'm intrigued with the thick butter icing having enough stuctual integrity for this business. Would you be willing to share the recipe or technique?
