begging, pleading, imploring, groveling

Remember when I mentioned writing a screenplay with my sister and her daughter Lizzy? Well, it's done. And it's fantastic.

Our official logline:

Stars Fall is a modern rendition of Jane Austen’s 1818 novel Persuasion. Rising pop-star, April Rain falls in love with Freddy West, a grocery clerk, but is persuaded by her manager and father to end the romance. Five years later, has-been April and now chart-topper Freddy are asked to sing together at her sister’s wedding.

Want to hear more? Of course you do.

The BBC version of Persuasion is somewhat gray, but our modern rendition is filled with color-- a gorgeous beach sunset, a Mad Hatter themed birthday party, the requisite makeover scene (with a twist), a posh bridal shop, Austenesque gardens and a glorious fall wedding. The most famous moment in Persuasion comes when Louisa falls from the pier-- this time, it's the Santa Monica Pier with the ferris wheel, roller coaster, crowds and a forty foot drop to the ocean.

One of the strongest facets of of our updated story is casting our two leads as singer/songwriters. While not quite a musical, Stars Fall has several scenes where songs fit in naturally. We've included song descriptions and suggestions, but ideally, the movie would be produced with an original soundtrack.

Writing this screenplay has been incredibly therapeutic-- whenever my sister and I are tempted to revisit the excruciating events of the past year, we turn instead to discussing bits of dialogue or how to flesh out Rosy's character. The screenplay is charming, happy, laugh-out-loud funny and a delight to the eyes and ears: pure, delicious escapism.

Here is where the begging, pleading, imploring, groveling come in. Today is our mother's birthday-- a day that that I determined we would begin marketing our work-- and I have nowhere to send it. My calls to a dozen production companies and agents were met with the singular question, "Who do you know? We only take scripts by recommendation from someone in the business."

Um, I don't know anybody.

It's completely counterintuitive to me to ask for help; we've studied the books, learned the formatting and the lingo, revised and revised and I believe our writing should stand on it's own. But I need someone to read it first.

So please, please, if you know someone. If you know someone who knows someone, will you please email me (or facebook or leave a comment here)? Or if you simply want to read our screenplay yourself (and help me find those last few typos), I'd love to send it your way.

And thank you, always, for reading and listening and praying with me.

Michelle, my brother is a director/producer in LA. OK, don't get too excited. He's a director/producer of animated shows like Ben 10 and Transformers Animated. But still...he might have some connections (although Cartoon Network is hardly a major movie maker), and he's got great taste. And a wife who likes Jane Austen, I assume. So what I'm trying to say is I can ask him if he knows anybody if you'd like.

The closest connection I have to film is a mission friend who now is an editor for Yo Gabba Gabba in LA. BUT I will ask him if he has connections that can help out. I've never met you, but I have met your dear sister and I've been a faithful reader and fan of you and your blog for quite some time. Selfishly, I'd also love to see this movie. So let's make it happen!

I can't help in the finding someone to help you business, however, I have to ask you one very, very important question: What did you do with the letter writing scene??

The newest PBS version of Persuasion left it out. She just gets the letter. BBC did it right! The incredible moment when she reads his confession of love that he was writing right in front of her!! It's part of Austen's pure genius.

So, I'm begging you: Did you have some kind of letter (singing?) scene? Just one Austen oficiando desperate to know. :) Other than that, I think it sounds fantastic! I hope you find someone soon.

first! eek! I am excited Kerri and Sarah. I can't help it.

And Cheryl, the letter turns into a text. :) It's a marvelous scene.

Hooray, you! Sounds fantastic, Michelle. Alas, I know no one in the movie/tv/screenplay industry. I'm searching my brain and coming up empty. Except my childhood best friend's brother was in The Great Brain in the 1980s. Does that count?? :)

Oh...except my college friend is married to the guy who started Hale Productions and did all those LDS movies: Singles Ward, etc. Are you thinking LDS audience or general?

Between Nate and I we might know some one who might be able to help. In fact, a girl that I am friends (acquaintances?) with used to work for Universal. Her father-in-law/my friend's dad does special effects for movies.

I don't know that I have any contacts but I totally want to read it and I'm an excellent proofreader (most of the time.)

Obviously and of course I want to read it! Please?

Isn't Sharlee's daughter interning somewhere with someone well known? Would that work? Would her daughter know someone?

Happy birthday for your Mum too - let's have cake!

I'm not BFF with Shannon Hale, but I'm friends with friends of hers. She's in England finishing up the filming of her book-made-into-a-screenplay Austenland right this moment...but filming wraps up in like 3 days and she'll be home. It's being directed by Jerusha Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite fame) and produced by Stephenie Meyer (yes, Twilight). If you don't have any better options, I can try and pursue that route and put you in contact with them. But you'll have to let me read the script first! :-)

Michelle

My husband owns a production company, Fueld Films here in Austin. He is a director and writer. They are ALWAYS hunting for a good scripts and have a few in the works now. They also know $ "people" if they have good material to sell... meaning a great finished script. Movies are the dream for my husband and always have been. He is a story teller at heart and so smart but finding a stellar script is much harder to come by. He is a perfectionist too so has a great eye for quality.
You can see some of their advertising work on their website
www.fueldfilms.com
They have done quite a bit of national work and have lots of connections in the film biz... everything from crew to producers etc.

Let me know if you want to know their info. I'll get you in touch with my hubby or their executive producer.
XO
Jen

Michelle, I am so excited for you and proud of you! Look at what you've accomplished! Amazing! I have zero connections except with the One upstairs. I'll put in a good word. ;-)

Hi, I'm a friend of your cousin-in-law Catherine. I've put the word out on Facebook with several film groups I'm connected to, so maybe that will get you some action. I've had one response from Xenia B. Grubstein, and she said to submit your script to her and she'd love to read it, that her gang is always looking for great new scripts. I'll pass on any other word I get. https://www.facebook.com/personafilms

I am so excited to get my hands on this!

I know Cristy Powell is bff's with Jerusha Hess. I've heard for months all about what Blue was referring to. Those are major power ladies in the biz that's for sure.

Let's talk to Cristy!

And I'm praying for you in all other things too. Miss you sweetie.

Michelle,
I know two different people..The first one is Rachel Heder Short, she is the sister of Jon Heder "Napolean Dynamite" and I think her brothers Jon and Dan are trying to get their production company going...Maybe they could look at it. Second...I know a gal here in Portland that has written a few books and had them published..Not sure if she is what your looking for....My email is rockelledixon@gmail.com

I can hook you up with who I do know and who knows from there.

My brother-in-law is a longtime production designer and Academy member. I'm sure he would be happy to read the script and pass it along to the right person if he felt like it was marketable.

Let me know if you're interested.

=)
